The texture of the scratching post is as important as the size and shape. Many cats prefer sisal rope; others prefer corrugated cardboard or carpet on the scratching post.

How to Train Your Cat to Use the Scratching Post
Location is very important. Cats often stretch or scratch when they wake up, so place one near your cat’s sleeping area. Important things to keep in mind:
- Consider placing a scratching post or pad near where your cat is currently scratching that is undesirable to you (i.e. in front of a couch leg). If your cat scratches somewhere other than the scratching post or pad; gently pick her up, take her to the scratcher, and then reward her.
- If your cat is scratching on furniture or carpet, do not punish her. Instead, pay attention to your cat’s position and the texture of the material when she scratches to help identify better choices of scratching posts for your cat.
Remember that your cat learns best through positive reinforcement. As you are redirecting your cat to use her new scratching post or pad, make sure you give him a reward immediately, to reinforce the positive behavior. The reward may be a treat like a cookie or catnip, or it could be interactive play, petting or grooming.

·      Placez un grattoir près de l’endroit où votre chat aime déjà gratter mais qui n’est pas souhaitable pour vous (derrière le divan par exemple). Si votre chat gratte ailleurs que sur le poteau, prenez-le doucement, emmenez-le au grattoir, puis récompensez-le.
·      Si votre chat gratte les meubles ou les tapis, ne le punissez pas. Portez plutôt attention à la position de votre chat et à la texture du matériau où il gratte pour vous aider à identifier de meilleurs choix de grattoir pour votre chat.
·      Placez ensuite le poteau à gratter à côté du mobilier que votre chat égratigne.
Souvenez-vous que votre chat apprend plus rapidement avec un renforcement positif. À chaque fois que vous redirigez votre chat vers son nouveau griffoir, assurez-vous de lui donner une récompense immédiatement (dans les 3 secondes) pour renforcer le comportement positif. Il est important de se rappeler que vous devez trouver une récompense que votre chat aime beaucoup: une gâterie, de l’herbe à chat, jouer avec lui, le flatter….
